No one really likes an angry person in life or in person. People especially don’t like angry people when they “attack” your established traditions and long held beliefs. When there is a shift in society’s power structure the media and others like to focus on the angry people as if doing so discredits the supporters of the change. It seems to be working that way for atheism too.

Austin Cline’s Atheism blog has a post about the lack of inclusion of atheists in the so-called “interfaith” religious service to kick off the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver this coming week. While reading the Washington Post online last night I came across this little headline:
Atheists Who Pray? On Faith Panel | New Pew survey says 21% of atheists believe in God, 10% pray. What gives?
Indeed – what gives?
I had to read Doug Giles’ blog post “How to Shut Up an Atheist if You Must”, and felt compelled to read it. Being a non-believer I needed to see what if anything the author wrote would actually shut me up. I can rest easy as nothing he commented is new nor will it shut atheists up.
Jacques Berlinerblau says uppity atheists need to shut up. Berlinerblau is one of us – a nonbeliever. He is on the advisory panel of the Secular Web run by the Internet Infidels and he wrote the book “The Secular Bible: Why Nonbelievers Must Take Religion Seriously”. Say it ain’t so, Jacques.
The panel tonight included an actual atheist from the US, Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheist. The other members were Rachel Maddow of Air America and Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, a conservative minister who once referred to blacks stranded in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as “welfare-pampered,” “lazy” and “immoral.”
