Rowan County (KY) Clerk Kim Davis was jailed on Thursday 9/3 after being found in contempt of court for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in her county. She previously lost all of her appeals including a last ditch effort to have the US Supreme Court issue a stay. Of course reaction by the religious right is apocalyptic. The reality is Davis was jailed for not following the law – not for her religious beliefs.
From the Friendly Atheist:
Remember: This has nothing to do with her faith. Davis is not being punished for her Christian beliefs. She’s being punished for being a government official who refuses to do the job she signed up to do.
There are people like Mike Huckabee who will inevitably claim Christians are being punished for their beliefs. That’s a lie. Davis is welcome to be a bigot in her church and home. But she has no business stopping gay couples from obtaining legal marriage licenses — in the same county where they pay taxes, no less — just because she has a faith-based hang-up about it.
Some GOP presidential candidates, like Huckabee, revealed their support for Christian Sharia Law by running to support Kim Davis’ law breaking.
The nut-job faction of the religious right were quick to equate the jailing to everyday standard persecution and to the Holocaust. Reality shows that Davis isn’t being murdered for her stance and she and many other Christians who don’t like same-sex marriage can still hate same-sex marriage. They just can’t force their beliefs on others by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples as part of their public service jobs.
Davis will be in jail until she signs same-sex couple’s marriage licenses.
The religious right bigots will want to drag this out until next year when the Kentucky legislature meets next so they change the rules and protect people with the same beliefs as Davis from having to even see a LGBTQ person.
I can just see the 700 Club episode now: “Christmas With The Martyr Kim Davis In Prison” and Rev Pat Robertson raising a ton of cash.
